FIRES AND BARBECUES
Fires and barbecues are NOT allowed on any of the public spaces of the estate or on the beaches.
Although a lot of people enjoy taking a barbecue or starting a fire to cook over, it is extremely dangerous. Particularly at Bovisand where the cliff foliage, which is a major part of the cliff’s erosion protection system, can be very flammable.
Fires can affect the stability of the cliffs as well as decimate many species of plants and animals. They are also very dangerous to humans, particularly in isolated areas such as off the main green. The chalets at Bovisand are all made of timber and a fire anywhere on the estate could easily and rapidly spread, causing devastation to the site.
Unfortunately, people still insist on having them, despite requests not to, and the use of disposable barbecues on the estate and beaches have caused a lot of problems. When used on the grass they leave a burnt area which takes a long time to recover, and after use they have been placed in hedges and bins resulting in several fires.
Illegal use of fires and barbecues on the beaches also cause a lot of problems, as after their use the sand can still be very hot, and people have suffered from burnt feet walking over these areas. Burying them is also dangerous with many people being injured when walking over the debris after the tide has reduced the level it was buried at.
For these reasons
FIRES AND BARBEQUES ARE NOT PERMITTED
ON ANY OF THE PUBLIC SPACES OR BEACHES.
