Mrs Hutchins remembers coming to Bovisand 70 years ago ( 1939) when she was 6 years old.
Access was by boat with payment of one penny to get in through a turnstile…this was until two teachers challenged the legality of this. Their appeal was upheld and after this no charge was made….
Mrs Hutchins remembers that there was only one chalet at Bovisand, along with a Gypsy caravan which was at the West Point end. Most people used tents but were able to store them in huts….no sleeping in the huts but it was useful storage rather than take everything home.
During the war Mrs Hutchins remembers being at Bovisand during an air raid and an air raid shelter was build for the children in a hedge using driftwood, she remembers it had a chair in it too!
Mrs Hutchins said that Her Uncles Sam & Harry were in the Home Guard at Staddiscombe and they told stories about shooting down a plane into the Sound just off Bovisand. There were some soldiers housed at Bovisand during the war.
